Statement on R. Kelly Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison

R. Kelly’s sentencing today, June 29, of 30 years in prison represents one of the most high-profile #MeToo moments in the United States for women and girls of color.

Kelly, who exploited his fame and wealth, repeatedly lured and sexually abused women and children, some as young as age 13 and 14. Saprea condemns Kelly’s reprehensible actions of child sexual abuse, including complicit behaviors that enabled Kelly’s pattern of exploitation to continue for more than two decades.

Victims of sexual abuse endure traumas that no individual should have to experience. Each woman, adolescent, and child is deserving of justice and healing. This case highlights women of color whose voices have long been dismissed on this issue. Saprea is committed to offering hope to survivors of all backgrounds that they are not alone as they heal from the lasting impacts of child sexual abuse.

One in four women in the U.S. are survivors of child sexual abuse. Saprea exists to liberate individuals and society from child sexual abuse and its lasting impacts.  The nonprofit advocates for all survivors of child sexual abuse, including those whose stories are dismissed or invalidated. Saprea helps these survivors navigate their individual healing journeys. There is hope. There is healing. Learn more about Saprea’s healing and prevention resources at
